Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Indian Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum indicum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In TCM, Chrysanthemum flowers are commonly used to "dispel wind and heat," and to support respiratory health, especially in cases involving cough, fever, and symptoms of colds. There are historical references to its use in addressing conditions that involve "phlegm-heat in the lungs," which often present with cough and sometimes an accumulation of fluids or mucus in the lungs. The herb is thought to have anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and mild expectorant properties according to traditional texts. However, while these traditional uses are well-documented, there is limited modern scientific evidence specifically validating the efficacy of Chrysanthemum indicum for treating "fluid in the lungs" (such as pleural effusion or pulmonary edema). Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects, but these do not directly address or confirm benefits for fluid accumulation in the lungs. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition, especially for respiratory issues with heat and phlegm, robust scientific validation for this particular indication is lacking. The evidence rating is therefore moderate due to strong historical precedent but insufficient clinical data.
