In the context of Lyme Disease, there is no robust scientific evidence directly supporting the use of licorice root as a treatment or cure. However, herbal protocols for Lyme disease, such as those advocated by Stephen Buhner and other herbalists, sometimes include licorice root as a supportive ingredient. The rationale is primarily its traditional use to reduce inflammation, support adrenal function during stress (which can be significant in chronic Lyme), and as a harmonizer in herbal formulas. Some laboratory studies have shown that licorice root contains compounds (such as glycyrrhizin) with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, but these findings have not been specifically validated in clinical trials for Lyme disease. Therefore, while licorice root is traditionally used as part of broader herbal approaches for Lyme disease, the evidence for its effectiveness in this specific context is limited, and it is not considered a primary or direct treatment for the infection itself.
