Evidence supporting the use of: Andrographis
For the health condition: Lymph Nodes or Glands (swollen)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Andrographis paniculata, commonly known as "king of bitters," has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is primarily valued for its purported anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and immune-supportive properties. In these traditional systems, Andrographis has occasionally been used to support the body during infections or inflammatory conditions, which can sometimes include symptoms such as swollen lymph nodes or glands. However, this use is largely based on its general role in managing "heat" or "toxicity" in the body, not on direct evidence for lymphatic conditions.
There is very limited scientific evidence specifically supporting Andrographis for the treatment of swollen lymph nodes or glandular swelling. Most modern clinical studies focus on its effectiveness in treating respiratory tract infections, common colds, and inflammatory responses, rather than lymphatic indications. While Andrographis demonstrates anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects in vitro and in animal models, direct clinical evidence for its use in swollen lymph nodes is lacking. Therefore, while its use for this purpose can be traced to traditional practices, robust validation from clinical studies is absent, and evidence supporting this application remains weak.
