Atractylodes (primarily Atractylodes macrocephala and Atractylodes lancea) is a well-known herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, it is used to "tonify the Spleen," "drain dampness," and "resolve swelling," which can include the treatment of swollen lymph nodes or glands. Texts such as the Shennong Bencao Jing and the Compendium of Materia Medica describe its use for conditions involving edema, phlegm, and swelling, which by TCM theory, may relate to swollen glands or lymph nodes. The rationale is based on the herb’s reputed ability to strengthen digestive and immune function, thereby helping the body clear stagnation or accumulations (such as swelling).
However, scientific evidence directly linking Atractylodes to the treatment or reduction of swollen lymph nodes is limited. Some modern research suggests that Atractylodes has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, but these studies are mostly preclinical and rarely address lymphatic conditions specifically. There are few, if any, high-quality clinical trials demonstrating efficacy for swollen lymph nodes. Thus, while Atractylodes is traditionally used in the context of swelling within TCM, this use is primarily justified by historical tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
