For the health condition: Lymph Nodes or Glands (swollen)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fu ling (Poria cocos) is a well-known fungus used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), primarily for its diuretic and dampness-resolving properties. Historically, fu ling is included in formulas aimed at promoting urination, reducing edema, and supporting the function of the spleen and stomach. In TCM theory, swollen lymph nodes or glands are often interpreted as accumulations of "phlegm," "dampness," or "toxins" within the body. Fu ling is sometimes prescribed as part of multi-herb formulations to address such conditions, aiming to "drain dampness" and reduce swelling. However, its use is based almost exclusively on traditional concepts rather than modern biomedical understanding of lymphatic disorders. There is little to no direct scientific evidence supporting fu ling’s effectiveness specifically for swollen lymph nodes or glandular swelling. Most available research focuses on its general anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and diuretic effects, but these have not been directly linked to clinical improvements in lymphadenopathy. Therefore, while fu ling has a traditional basis for use in conditions that may manifest as swollen glands, the evidence supporting its use for this specific indication is limited and mainly anecdotal or based on TCM practice rather than rigorous scientific validation.
