Evidence supporting the use of: Rosa laevigata
For the health condition: Lymph Nodes or Glands (swollen)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rosa laevigata, commonly known as Cherokee rose, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, its fruit (Rosae Laevigatae Fructus) is often utilized for conditions related to urinary and reproductive systems, but it is also sometimes used in formulas intended to "clear heat and toxins" or support the body's response to inflammation and swelling, including that of lymph nodes or glands. This usage is grounded in traditional theories rather than modern biomedical understanding. The rationale is often based on its supposed ability to astringe (reduce leakage of fluids) and its inclusion alongside other herbs in multi-component prescriptions for swollen or inflamed areas. However, there is a lack of modern clinical or pharmacological studies specifically demonstrating efficacy of Rosa laevigata in treating swollen lymph nodes or glands. Most scientific research on Rosa laevigata focuses on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects in general, not specifically regarding lymphatic health. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition, current scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for lymphatic or glandular swelling is weak or indirect.
