Evidence supporting the use of: Aescin
For the body system: Lymphatics
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Aescin, also known as escin, is a mixture of saponins derived primarily from the seeds of the horse chestnut tree (Aesculus hippocastanum). Its use to support the lymphatic system is supported by scientific evidence, primarily due to its vascular protective, anti-edematous, and anti-inflammatory properties. Clinical studies and systematic reviews have shown that aescin can reduce capillary permeability, improve venous tone, and decrease swelling (edema), which are key issues in lymphatic and venous disorders. Aescin acts by sealing off capillary walls, limiting fluid leakage into surrounding tissues, and enhancing lymphatic drainage. Several randomized controlled trials have demonstrated its efficacy in chronic venous insufficiency, a condition closely related to lymphatic stasis and edema. Additionally, aescin is included in European pharmacopoeias and is prescribed in some countries for the management of chronic venous and lymphatic disorders, particularly for symptoms such as swelling, pain, and heaviness in the legs. While most research focuses on venous insufficiency, the overlap between venous and lymphatic dysfunction means the benefits are often applicable to both systems. However, it is important to note that the highest level of evidence is for edema reduction and improvement of venous function; direct studies on primary lymphatic disorders are fewer but suggest similar mechanisms of benefit.
