Evidence supporting the use of: Boerhavia diffussa
For the body system: Lymphatics
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Boerhavia diffusa, commonly known as Punarnava, has a long-standing history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, particularly for its supposed benefits to the lymphatic system. Traditional healers have recommended Boerhavia diffusa for its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties, which are believed to indirectly support lymphatic function by promoting fluid balance, reducing swelling, and aiding in the removal of toxins. In Ayurveda, it is often classified as a "rasayana" herb, used to rejuvenate and strengthen bodily tissues, including the lymphatics (rasa dhatu).
However, scientific research directly linking Boerhavia diffusa to lymphatic health is limited. Some studies have demonstrated its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities, and animal models have shown reductions in edema, which may be relevant to lymphatic congestion. For example, extracts of Boerhavia diffusa have been observed to reduce paw swelling in rats and to possess bioactive compounds (such as punarnavine and boeravinones) that modulate immune responses. Still, these effects are not exclusively or conclusively tied to direct lymphatic support. The majority of available evidence is preclinical, and robust clinical trials in humans focused on lymphatic health are lacking.
In summary, Boerhavia diffusa's use for lymphatic support is primarily justified by traditional systems of medicine, with only preliminary scientific indications that may relate to lymphatic function.
