Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, especially among Native American tribes and early European settlers in North America. Historically, boneset was used to support the body during fevers, colds, influenza, and other illnesses with systemic symptoms, which were often interpreted as involving the lymphatic system due to swelling, aches, or “blocked” fluids. The herb was believed to promote sweating and “cleansing” of bodily fluids, which aligns with traditional concepts of supporting lymphatic health, although the actual physiological mechanisms were not clearly understood. There is limited modern scientific evidence to validate boneset’s efficacy specifically for lymphatic system support. Most research focuses on its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, which may indirectly influence lymphatic function, but direct evidence is lacking. The available literature supports its historical use for symptomatic relief of fevers and respiratory illnesses rather than targeted lymphatic support. Therefore, its association with lymphatic health is primarily traditional rather than evidence-based. Caution is advised as boneset can be toxic in high doses, and more rigorous studies are needed to clarify its safety and efficacy.
