Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bupleurum (most commonly Bupleurum chinense) is a traditional herb widely used in Chinese medicine, particularly as part of formulations like Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction). In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Bupleurum is considered to have properties that "soothe the liver," "harmonize" body systems, and "disperse stagnation," which are interpreted by some practitioners as supporting the body's natural detoxification processes, including lymphatic function. However, the historical use is based on concepts unique to TCM, rather than an explicit understanding of the lymphatic system as described in Western medicine.
There is minimal direct scientific evidence linking Bupleurum to enhanced lymphatic function. Most modern research focuses on its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and hepatoprotective effects, primarily attributed to compounds called saikosaponins. While these effects might theoretically support the immune and detoxification roles of the lymphatic system, explicit scientific studies demonstrating a direct action on lymphatic tissues or flow are lacking. Thus, Bupleurum’s use as a lymphatic support herb is primarily justified by tradition and indirect reasoning, rather than robust clinical data.
