For the body system: Lymphatics
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bupleurum is primarily used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) rather than based on scientific validation, especially for supporting the lymphatic system. In TCM, Bupleurum (most commonly Bupleurum chinense) is considered a key herb for "harmonizing" or "releasing" the exterior and is often included in formulas intended to "spread liver qi" and "resolve constraint." These actions are thought to support healthy fluid movement and immune function, which practitioners sometimes associate with lymphatic health. However, in the TCM framework, the concept of the lymphatic system is not directly defined as in Western medicine. Instead, Bupleurum is used in classic formulas such as Xiao Chai Hu Tang and Chai Hu Shu Gan San for conditions thought to involve stagnation or congestion, which some herbalists extrapolate to include lymphatic stagnation.
Scientific studies on Bupleurum focus mainly on its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and hepatoprotective properties, with little direct research on its effects on the human lymphatic system. Animal studies have shown that certain saponins in Bupleurum may modulate immune responses and inflammation, but these findings do not directly validate effects on lymphatic function. Thus, the use of Bupleurum for lymphatic support is justified primarily by tradition, with limited supporting evidence and no direct clinical trials in this area.
