Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Castor oil and its derivatives have been used traditionally, especially in naturopathic and folk medicine, to support the lymphatic system. The most common practice involves applying castor oil packs to the skin over areas believed to be associated with lymphatic flow, such as the abdomen. Proponents claim that this can stimulate the lymphatic system, promote detoxification, and reduce inflammation. However, the scientific evidence supporting these claims is minimal. Most of the available information consists of anecdotal reports and traditional usage rather than controlled clinical studies. A review of the scientific literature reveals little direct research on castor oil's effects on the lymphatic system in humans. Some very limited studies suggest that topical application of castor oil may influence immune parameters, but these findings have not been robustly replicated or linked specifically to measurable improvements in lymphatic function. As such, the primary justification for castor oil derivative use in lymphatic support remains rooted in traditional practices rather than scientific validation.
