Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Deerbrush (Ceanothus integerrimus) is a plant native to North America and has been traditionally used by some Indigenous peoples and herbalists. Its primary traditional use relates to supporting the lymphatic system, particularly as an alternative and 'blood purifier.' Historically, various Ceanothus species (including Deerbrush’s close relative, Ceanothus americanus, or Red Root) have been employed in North American herbalism as agents to assist with lymphatic congestion, swollen glands, and other related conditions. However, most of the references to Deerbrush’s use are anecdotal or found in older herbal texts rather than robust, peer-reviewed scientific studies.

There is little to no direct scientific research or clinical trials specifically supporting the effects of Ceanothus integerrimus on lymphatic health. Most of what is known comes from traditional herbal practice and ethnobotanical records. As such, while its use is justified by tradition, the evidence base is weak by modern scientific standards. The evidence rating of 1 reflects the existence of historical use but a lack of rigorous validation.
