Evidence supporting the use of: European Mistletoe
For the body system: Lymphatics
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
European Mistletoe (Viscum album) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe. Traditionally, it has been used as a remedy for a variety of ailments, including as a "blood purifier" and tonic believed to support the immune and lymphatic systems. However, the historical use for the lymphatic system is largely anecdotal and rooted in herbal folklore, rather than in robust clinical evidence. Most contemporary research on European Mistletoe focuses on its potential role as an adjunctive therapy in cancer care, mainly for its purported immune-modulating and cytotoxic properties, not specifically for lymphatic support. There is little to no scientific validation that mistletoe directly supports or influences the lymphatic system in humans. Systematic reviews and clinical trials have primarily investigated its use in oncology, not in lymphatic health per se. Consequently, while traditional herbalists may use mistletoe for general immune and lymphatic support, the evidence supporting this application is weak and not substantiated by modern research. In summary, European Mistletoe's reputation for supporting the lymphatic system is based on traditional use and lacks strong scientific backing.
