Evidence supporting the use of: Horse chestnut
For the body system: Lymphatics
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) seed extract is traditionally used for vascular health, particularly in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), which involves poor venous return and symptoms such as swelling and varicose veins. Scientific studies have validated its efficacy in improving symptoms related to CVI, largely due to its active component, aescin, which has anti-inflammatory and vascular-protective effects. The lymphatic system is closely related to the venous system, and some research indicates that horse chestnut extract can help reduce leg edema, which may be due to improved lymphatic as well as venous function.
Systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials (such as Pittler MH & Ernst E, 2012, Phytomedicine) have shown that horse chestnut seed extract is significantly more effective than placebo in reducing leg volume and swelling. However, direct studies on lymphatic function are limited; most evidence is extrapolated from its effects on venous insufficiency and edema, which often have a lymphatic component. There is moderate scientific support for its use in supporting the lymphatic system indirectly, mainly by reducing fluid buildup and inflammation, but it is not established as a primary lymphatic remedy. Therefore, while scientific evidence exists for its effect on edema and vascular health, its use for strictly lymphatic support is supported to a moderate degree.
