Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) is a cytokine that plays a crucial role in the regulation and activation of the immune system, which is closely associated with the lymphatic system. Its primary function is to activate macrophages, enhance antigen presentation, and stimulate the differentiation of T cells, all of which are key components of lymphatic and immune responses. Clinically, IFN-γ has been used as an immunomodulatory agent, particularly in the treatment of chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) and severe malignant osteopetrosis—conditions where defects in immune cell function impair the lymphatic and overall immune responses. The scientific validation for its use is robust in these rare immunodeficiency disorders, where studies have shown that IFN-γ therapy can reduce the frequency and severity of infections by enhancing the microbicidal activity of phagocytes within the lymphatic system.

However, the use of interferon gamma is not generalized for all lymphatic conditions but rather targeted to specific immune dysfunctions. There is also substantial research on its role in modulating immune responses in certain infections, autoimmune diseases, and cancers, pointing to its importance in lymphatic immune surveillance and regulation. Nonetheless, due to its potent immunomodulatory activities, therapeutic use is carefully controlled and associated with significant side effects. In summary, scientific evidence strongly supports interferon gamma’s role in supporting certain lymphatic and immune functions, particularly in defined clinical scenarios, but its routine use is not justified for broad lymphatic support in the general population.
