Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Lentinan is a polysaccharide extracted from the shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes) and has been studied for its immunomodulatory properties. Scientific research suggests that lentinan can enhance various aspects of immune function, including the activation of macrophages, dendritic cells, and natural killer cells. These immune responses are closely linked to the lymphatic system, which is responsible for transporting immune cells and facilitating immune surveillance throughout the body.

Clinical studies, mainly in Asia, have used lentinan as an adjunct therapy in cancer treatment. Its benefits are thought to derive from its ability to stimulate immune function, which indirectly supports the health of the lymphatic system. For example, a review published in Cancer Immunology, Immunotherapy (2010) described lentinan’s role in improving host immune responses and possibly enhancing lymphocyte activity. However, while there is scientific evidence that lentinan modulates immune function, direct research on its effects specifically on the lymphatic system is limited.

Overall, the use of lentinan to support the lymphatic system is scientifically grounded through its general immunomodulatory effects, but there is a lack of direct, high-quality evidence demonstrating specific benefits for lymphatic function in humans. Thus, the evidence is moderate (rated 3 out of 5), with most support coming from studies on immune enhancement rather than direct lymphatic outcomes.
