Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In TCM, licorice is commonly used to "harmonize" herbal formulas and is believed to support the body's detoxification processes. While classical texts mention its use for "clearing heat" and supporting the body's natural elimination pathways, the direct association with the lymphatic system is more interpretive. There is little direct traditional documentation specifically citing licorice as a remedy for lymphatic health; rather, its traditional uses include soothing mucous membranes, supporting respiratory health, and promoting the function of the adrenal glands.

Scientifically, licorice contains glycyrrhizin and other compounds with anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating properties. However, peer-reviewed research directly investigating licorice's effect on the lymphatic system is extremely limited. Some studies have examined its anti-inflammatory actions, suggesting possible indirect support for immune function, but not specifically for lymphatic drainage or lymphatic tissue health. Therefore, while licorice is traditionally used for general detoxification and immune support, its use for the lymphatic system is based more on interpretive extension of general traditional uses rather than specific direct evidence.
