For the body system: Lymphatics
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus americanus) has a long history of traditional use by Native American tribes and early European settlers in North America. It is most commonly used in herbal medicine as a lymphatic tonic, believed to support the lymphatic system, which is responsible for fluid balance and immune function in the body. Traditional herbalists have used the root and leaves to address issues such as swollen lymph nodes, tonsillitis, and other lymphatic congestion. The roots, in particular, are said to have alterative (blood-cleaning) and astringent properties, which may contribute to their traditional use for lymphatic support. However, there is very limited modern scientific research validating these uses. Most of the evidence available is anecdotal or based on historical texts rather than controlled clinical studies. Phytochemical analyses have identified compounds such as tannins and ceanothic acid in the plant, but their specific effects on the lymphatic system have not been well-documented in scientific literature. As a result, New Jersey Tea's reputation as a lymphatic herb is primarily rooted in traditional herbal medicine rather than robust scientific validation.
