Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Norwegian Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum), like other brown seaweeds, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, primarily for its high iodine content and its purported effects on metabolism and thyroid function. Some traditional practitioners and herbalists have suggested that kelp may help "cleanse" or "support" the lymphatic system, but there is minimal historical documentation specifically linking kelp to direct support of lymphatic function. Scientifically, there is very limited research on kelp's effects on the lymphatic system itself. Studies on kelp have focused mostly on thyroid health, antioxidant properties, and metabolic effects. The rationale for using kelp for lymphatic support is usually extrapolated from its general mineral content, particularly iodine, and its possible anti-inflammatory effects. However, no robust clinical trials or mechanistic studies have established a direct benefit of Norwegian Kelp for lymphatic system health. Thus, while there is a tradition of its use for general detoxification and wellness (with the lymphatic system sometimes included in such claims), the evidence is weak and primarily anecdotal, justifying a low evidence rating.
