Evidence supporting the use of: Polyporus
For the body system: Lymphatics
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Polyporus umbellatus, commonly known as Zhu Ling in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use as a diuretic and for supporting fluid metabolism in the body. In TCM theory, this translates to supporting the "lymphatic system" as understood in Western terms, by promoting the movement and drainage of bodily fluids and reducing edema. The use of Polyporus for such purposes is well-documented in classical Chinese herbal texts, where it is frequently recommended for conditions involving water retention, swelling, and difficulty urinating. However, these traditional uses are not based on the modern anatomical or physiological understanding of the lymphatic system, but rather on the broader TCM concepts of fluid balance.
Scientific studies on Polyporus umbellatus have primarily focused on its diuretic properties, immune modulation, and anti-tumor effects. There is very limited direct research connecting Polyporus to lymphatic system health as defined in Western medicine. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Polyporus extracts may enhance immune function and reduce inflammation, these findings do not specifically validate effects on lymphatic drainage or lymphatic disorders in humans. Thus, while its use for lymphatic support is well-rooted in traditional practice, modern scientific validation for this specific indication is lacking.
