Evidence supporting the use of: Red-Rooted Sage
For the body system: Lymphatics
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Red-Rooted Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza), also known as Danshen, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Within TCM, it is believed to "invigorate blood," "remove blood stasis," and "clear heat," effects which practitioners often interpret as supportive of the circulatory and, by extension, the lymphatic system. However, while Red-Rooted Sage is widely studied for its cardiovascular benefits, particularly for heart and blood vessel health, there is limited direct scientific evidence supporting its use specifically for lymphatic system support. Most references to its lymphatic uses are based on traditional herbal practice rather than clinical research. Some herbalists in Western traditions have adopted Red-Rooted Sage for lymphatic support, often drawing on its broader role in promoting fluid movement and reducing stagnation. Nevertheless, clinical trials and mechanistic studies addressing its impact on lymphatic function are lacking. Therefore, while its use for this purpose is justified by traditional practice, the scientific validation for Red-Rooted Sage as a lymphatic remedy remains weak.
