Ruscogenin is a steroidal sapogenin found in the plant Ruscus aculeatus (Butcher’s Broom), which has been traditionally used in European herbal medicine for supporting venous and lymphatic health. The use of Butcher’s Broom root, containing ruscogenin, is primarily based on its historical application for issues such as chronic venous insufficiency, hemorrhoids, and edema. These conditions are often related to poor lymphatic and venous circulation.

There is modest preclinical evidence suggesting that ruscogenin possesses anti-inflammatory and vasoprotective properties. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate that ruscogenin can reduce vascular permeability and inflammation, which may have implications for lymphatic function. However, specific high-quality clinical trials evaluating ruscogenin’s direct effect on the lymphatic system in humans are lacking. Most of the available clinical evidence focuses on the whole plant extract rather than isolated ruscogenin, and relates to venous rather than purely lymphatic disorders.

Thus, the use of ruscogenin to support the lymphatic system is chiefly justified by tradition and longstanding herbal use, with only limited supportive mechanistic and preclinical data. Until more robust scientific studies are conducted, the evidence for ruscogenin’s lymphatic benefits should be considered preliminary.
