Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Scrophularia ningpoensis, commonly known as Ningpo figwort, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Traditionally, it has been used to "clear heat," "cool the blood," and to support detoxification processes. In TCM theory, these actions are often linked to the health and function of the lymphatic system, which is believed to play a role in immune response and fluid balance. Scrophularia ningpoensis is included in various herbal formulas intended to address conditions characterized by "heat toxicity," swelling, and inflammation, which may be interpreted as lymphatic congestion or infection in modern terms.

However, direct scientific studies examining the effects of Scrophularia ningpoensis specifically on the lymphatic system are limited. Most available research focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of the plant may have effects on immune system markers and inflammation, but these are not directly linked to lymphatic function in a clinical context. Therefore, while its use for supporting the lymphatics is rooted in traditional practice, robust scientific validation for this specific use is currently lacking.
