Evidence supporting the use of: Self-Heal
For the body system: Lymphatics
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Self-Heal (Prunella vulgaris) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and Asia. Historically, it has been used for "wound healing," as well as to support the body’s “cleansing” functions, which some traditions associate with the lymphatic system. Herbalists have recommended Self-Heal for swollen glands, sore throats, and general lymphatic congestion, though these uses are based primarily on empirical and anecdotal evidence rather than modern scientific research. The plant’s purported lymphatic benefits are likely due to its anti-inflammatory and astringent properties, which traditional healers believed might help reduce swelling and promote lymphatic flow. However, there have been very few scientific studies directly investigating Self-Heal’s effects on the lymphatic system in humans or animals. Most modern research on Prunella vulgaris focuses on its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, but does not specifically address lymphatic health. Therefore, while its use to support lymphatic function is justified by tradition, there is little scientific validation at this time. Clinical trials or laboratory studies directly examining Self-Heal’s effects on lymphatic tissue or function are lacking, resulting in a low evidence rating for this particular use.
