Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Spanish Needle (Bidens pilosa) has a long history of use in traditional medicine across various cultures, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. Traditionally, it has been used to support the lymphatic system by promoting detoxification, reducing inflammation, and addressing swollen lymph nodes. Ethnobotanical records and folk medicine reports cite Spanish Needle as a remedy for conditions involving lymphatic congestion, such as boils, abscesses, and other infections believed to involve the lymphatic system. The plant contains flavonoids, polyacetylenes, and other compounds thought to contribute to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. However, while there are some laboratory and animal studies suggesting immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects of Spanish Needle, robust clinical trials specifically validating its efficacy in supporting the human lymphatic system are lacking. Thus, its use in this context is primarily justified by tradition rather than high-quality scientific evidence, and the overall evidence strength for this use is modest.
