Zeaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment found in high concentrations in the macula of the human retina. Its use for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is scientifically supported, particularly in the context of dietary supplementation to help slow the progression of this vision-threatening condition. Multiple large randomized controlled trials, most notably the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2), have demonstrated that supplementation with a combination of carotenoids (including zeaxanthin and lutein) and other antioxidants can reduce the risk of progression to advanced AMD in individuals at high risk.

Zeaxanthin acts as an antioxidant and filters harmful blue light, thereby protecting retinal cells from oxidative stress and photodamage—mechanisms implicated in the development and progression of AMD. Clinical evidence suggests that increased dietary intake or supplementation with zeaxanthin increases macular pigment optical density (MPOD), which is correlated with improved visual function and reduced risk of AMD progression. While not universally endorsed as a treatment to reverse AMD or restore lost vision, zeaxanthin’s role in prevention and slowing progression is well established, especially when used as part of an evidence-based supplement regimen alongside lutein and other vitamins.

Some uncertainty persists regarding the optimal dosage and long-term effects, and not all studies show equal benefit. However, the weight of evidence from large-scale, well-conducted studies warrants a high evidence score of 4 out of 5 for supporting the use of zeaxanthin as part of a comprehensive strategy to support macular health and manage AMD risk.
