Evidence supporting the use of: Alchornea floribunda
For the health condition: Malaria
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Alchornea floribunda is traditionally used in various parts of West and Central Africa for the treatment of malaria and other febrile illnesses. Ethnobotanical surveys have reported that decoctions and infusions of the plant’s leaves, stem bark, or roots are employed in folk medicine to reduce fever and alleviate malaria symptoms. However, scientific validation of its antimalarial efficacy is limited. Some in vitro studies have screened extracts of Alchornea floribunda for antiplasmodial activity, but the results have generally shown only modest effects, often at concentrations higher than would likely be achieved in traditional use. To date, there are no robust clinical trials or well-established pharmacological studies confirming significant antimalarial activity in humans. The ethnomedicinal use is therefore primarily supported by traditional knowledge rather than rigorous scientific evidence. Further research is needed to isolate potential active compounds and evaluate their safety and efficacy. In summary, while Alchornea floribunda is indeed used in traditional medicine for malaria, the current scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak.
