Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bougainvillea has traditionally been used in some cultures for the management of various ailments, including fever and respiratory issues. In the context of malaria, there are reports of its use in folk medicine, especially in parts of Africa and Asia, where decoctions of Bougainvillea leaves or flowers have sometimes been administered to those suffering from febrile illnesses presumed to be malaria. However, the evidence supporting its efficacy is primarily anecdotal and not well-documented in scientific literature. There are a few preliminary studies investigating the phytochemical content of Bougainvillea, such as flavonoids and alkaloids, some of which might possess mild antipyretic or anti-inflammatory properties. However, there is a lack of robust in vitro or in vivo studies specifically demonstrating anti-malarial activity of Bougainvillea extracts against Plasmodium species. No clinical trials have been conducted to validate its effectiveness or safety for malaria treatment in humans. In summary, while Bougainvillea is sometimes used in traditional medicine for symptoms that overlap with malaria, there is very limited scientific evidence to justify its use for treating or preventing malaria specifically. It should not be relied upon as a substitute for proven anti-malarial therapies.
