Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Coin-leaf desmodium (Desmodium gangeticum) has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and other South Asian herbal practices. It is employed to manage a variety of ailments, including fever and infectious diseases such as malaria. Traditional formulations often include Desmodium species as a component in polyherbal preparations aimed at reducing fever and supporting recovery from malaria. These uses are primarily based on empirical knowledge passed down through generations rather than on rigorous scientific evaluation.

Scientific evidence for the antimalarial efficacy of Coin-leaf desmodium is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have indicated that extracts from this plant may possess antipyretic (fever-reducing) and anti-inflammatory properties, and there are a few reports suggesting weak antiplasmodial activity. However, these findings are preliminary and not robust enough to support its use as a standalone or primary treatment for malaria. No well-conducted clinical trials in humans have confirmed its efficacy or safety in malaria therapy. Therefore, while its use is rooted in tradition, the current scientific backing is insufficient, and it should not replace established antimalarial treatments.
