Desmodium species, particularly Desmodium adscendens and Desmodium gangeticum, have been traditionally used in various African and Asian communities as herbal remedies for malaria and related febrile illnesses. Ethnobotanical surveys in countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya document the use of Desmodium leaves, roots, or whole plant extracts in decoctions or infusions to manage symptoms associated with malaria, such as fever, chills, and body pain. These practices have been passed down through generations and are often part of broader traditional medicine systems.
While there is a strong traditional basis for the use of Desmodium in malaria, scientific validation is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have suggested that extracts of various Desmodium species may possess antiplasmodial properties, but these findings are preliminary and not yet confirmed in human clinical trials. No major health organizations recommend Desmodium as a standard treatment for malaria, and its efficacy and safety in this context have not been established through rigorous scientific study. Therefore, its use is primarily justified by tradition, with only weak scientific support at this time.
