Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Desmodium molliculum, a plant native to South America and particularly used in Peruvian traditional medicine, has been traditionally employed for a variety of ailments, including as a treatment for fever and malaria-like symptoms. Ethnobotanical surveys, especially in regions like the Peruvian Andes, document its use by local communities and traditional healers for managing malaria or symptoms associated with it, such as fever and chills. However, the evidence supporting its use is primarily anecdotal and rooted in traditional knowledge rather than in scientific validation.

To date, there is minimal to no clinical or pharmacological research that specifically investigates the antimalarial efficacy of Desmodium molliculum. Some studies have explored the general antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties of Desmodium species, but direct evidence for antimalarial activity is lacking. No controlled human trials or robust in vitro studies have confirmed its effectiveness against Plasmodium species (the causative agents of malaria). Therefore, while the traditional use is well-documented, the scientific evidence base is weak, and its efficacy for malaria remains unproven according to current research literature.
