Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Desmodium species have a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, including as adjuncts or remedies for malaria. Ethnobotanical surveys, especially from West and Central Africa, document several Desmodium species (such as Desmodium adscendens, Desmodium gangeticum, and Desmodium triflorum) being used by local practitioners for treating malaria or malaria-like fevers. The typical preparation involves decoctions or infusions of leaves or aerial parts. Traditional healers often employ Desmodium in combination with other plants, which complicates attributing efficacy solely to Desmodium.

Scientific investigation into the antimalarial properties of Desmodium is limited but growing. A handful of in vitro studies have shown weak to moderate activity of certain Desmodium extracts against Plasmodium falciparum. For example, a few studies (published between 2006 and 2016) reported some antiplasmodial activity, but the potency is generally lower compared to established antimalarial drugs and to more potent ethnomedicinal plants like Artemisia annua. In vivo studies (in animal models) are scarce and do not provide robust evidence for efficacy. No clinical trials in humans have been published as of 2024.

In summary, the use of Desmodium for malaria is primarily justified by traditional practice, with only preliminary and weak preclinical scientific support. It should not be considered a substitute for proven antimalarial therapies.
