Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oldenlandia, particularly Oldenlandia corymbosa and Oldenlandia diffusa, has a long-standing history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and various folk practices across Asia and Africa. In these traditions, the plant has been valued for its purported antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, and has been employed to help alleviate fevers—including those attributed to malaria—by herbalists and traditional healers. The use for malaria is based more on empirical observation and historical precedent rather than detailed clinical understanding.

Scientifically, there is very limited direct evidence supporting Oldenlandia’s efficacy against malaria. A handful of in vitro and animal studies have indicated that extracts of Oldenlandia may possess some antiplasmodial activity, but these findings are preliminary and not substantiated by high-quality clinical trials in humans. The exact bioactive compounds and their mechanisms of action remain unclear, and the potency appears much lower compared to established antimalarial drugs.

Therefore, while Oldenlandia is traditionally used to support malaria treatment, scientific validation is weak and insufficient for recommendation as a primary therapy. Current evidence supports its traditional use (evidence rating: 2), but not clinical efficacy. It should not replace proven antimalarial medications.
