Evidence supporting the use of: Amino acids
For the body system: Male Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and play critical roles in numerous physiological processes, including those involved in the male reproductive system. Scientific evidence indicates that certain amino acids, such as L-arginine, L-carnitine, and L-citrulline, may positively influence male reproductive health. For example, L-arginine is a precursor for nitric oxide, a molecule that promotes vasodilation and is essential for erectile function. Clinical studies have shown that supplementation with L-arginine can improve erectile dysfunction in some men, especially when combined with other compounds. Similarly, L-carnitine has been investigated for its role in sperm motility and overall sperm quality, with some randomized controlled trials demonstrating improved semen parameters in men with infertility. However, while there is moderate scientific support for the use of specific amino acids to support aspects of male reproductive health, the evidence is not universally strong for all amino acids or for broad claims about general “amino acid” supplementation. Most positive findings come from studies using targeted amino acids at specific doses in populations with particular reproductive concerns (e.g., infertility, erectile dysfunction). Overall, there is scientific validation—though not at the highest level—for the use of certain amino acids in supporting the male reproductive system.
