Beta-sitosterol is a phytosterol commonly found in plant-based foods and is frequently included in supplements aimed at supporting the male reproductive system, particularly for prostate health. Scientific evidence suggests that beta-sitosterol may benefit men experiencing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that can affect urinary and reproductive function. Several randomized, placebo-controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that beta-sitosterol can modestly improve urinary symptoms and flow measures in men with BPH (see Wilt TJ et al., Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 1999; CD001043). The mechanism is not fully understood, but it may involve anti-inflammatory effects and inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase, which reduces the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to prostate growth.

However, while there is evidence supporting beta-sitosterol’s role in alleviating symptoms related to prostate enlargement, there is limited direct evidence that it broadly enhances overall male reproductive function (such as fertility or testosterone levels). Most research focuses on urinary and lower urinary tract symptoms, rather than reproductive parameters. In summary, beta-sitosterol is scientifically supported for improving some aspects of prostate health, which is part of the male reproductive system, but not for general male reproductive enhancement.
