Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bulbine natalensis is a succulent plant native to South Africa, traditionally used for a variety of medicinal purposes, including as an aphrodisiac and for male vitality. In recent years, scientific interest has focused on its potential role in supporting the male reproductive system, particularly in relation to testosterone levels and sexual function.

Several animal studies have investigated the effects of Bulbine natalensis extracts on male reproductive hormones. For example, research in rats has shown that it can increase serum testosterone levels and improve sperm quality and libido. A study by Yakubu and Afolayan (2010) found that oral administration of Bulbine natalensis extract led to increased testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels, as well as enhanced sexual behavior in male rats. However, these effects were dose-dependent, and higher doses showed possible adverse effects on liver and kidney function.

Despite promising preclinical results, there is a lack of robust human trials to conclusively establish efficacy or safety for this purpose. The evidence base is therefore limited to animal studies and mechanistic data, with no published large-scale clinical trials in humans. Thus, while scientific investigation exists, the evidence supporting Bulbine natalensis for male reproductive health remains preliminary, and more rigorous human research is needed.
