Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Butea superba is traditionally used in Thailand as a herbal remedy to support male reproductive health, particularly for improving sexual performance, libido, and erectile function. The roots of the plant have been used in Thai folk medicine for generations, often consumed as powders, decoctions, or extracts. Its traditional reputation as a male tonic is well documented in ethnobotanical literature from Southeast Asia, where it is sometimes referred to as "Kwao Krua Dang". Scientific studies investigating the efficacy of Butea superba are limited and mainly restricted to small, preliminary trials. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts from Butea superba may have androgenic and vasodilatory effects, possibly influencing blood flow to the genital area. A few small human studies, including a randomized controlled trial, have shown modest improvements in erectile function in men with mild erectile dysfunction when using Butea superba extracts. However, these studies are generally of low quality, with small sample sizes and short durations, and are insufficient to provide strong scientific validation. Overall, while there is a robust tradition of Butea superba being used for male reproductive health, current scientific evidence is weak and not conclusive. Larger, well-designed human trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for this use.
