Citrulline is an amino acid found naturally in foods like watermelon and is also produced by the body. It is often used in supplements marketed for supporting male reproductive health, particularly for its potential role in improving erectile function. The scientific basis for this use lies primarily in citrulline's ability to increase levels of arginine in the body, which is a precursor to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a molecule that helps relax blood vessels, facilitating improved blood flow—a key factor in erectile function.

Several small-scale clinical studies have examined the effects of citrulline supplementation on erectile dysfunction (ED). For example, a 2011 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Urology demonstrated that citrulline supplementation improved erection hardness in men with mild ED compared to placebo. However, the improvement, while statistically significant, was modest. Other studies have explored citrulline in combination with other supplements for sexual function, but isolating citrulline's specific effects can be challenging in these cases.

While citrulline is not a traditional remedy for male reproductive health, and the clinical evidence is limited and based on small sample sizes, there is some scientific validation for its use, particularly in the context of supporting erectile function through improved vascular health. More research with larger, more diverse populations is needed to fully establish its efficacy and optimal dosing.
