Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cordyceps is traditionally used in Chinese and Tibetan medicine to support male reproductive health, particularly for enhancing libido, sexual performance, and stamina. Historical texts and herbal compendiums mention its use for "strengthening kidney yang," which is associated with sexual vitality in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In these traditions, Cordyceps is thought to improve energy, reduce fatigue, and bolster reproductive function.

There is some preliminary scientific research examining Cordyceps’ effects on testosterone levels and sperm quality in animal models. For example, some studies in rodents suggest that Cordyceps may increase testosterone levels and improve sperm motility and quantity. However, robust human clinical trials are lacking, and the available studies are either small, of short duration, or not rigorously controlled. Thus, while there is a plausible biological mechanism—such as increased steroidogenesis and antioxidant activity—scientific validation remains limited.

In summary, Cordyceps’ reputation for supporting the male reproductive system is primarily rooted in traditional use. Scientific evidence is limited and not yet conclusive, warranting further investigation before strong recommendations can be made.
