Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Cowhage (Mucuna pruriens) has a history of traditional use in Ayurveda as an aphrodisiac and for supporting male reproductive health, particularly in enhancing libido and improving fertility. Scientific studies have begun to validate some of these traditional claims. Clinical research indicates that Mucuna pruriens seed extract can improve semen quality in infertile men by increasing sperm count and motility. Several studies attribute these effects to its high content of L-DOPA, a precursor to dopamine, which may positively influence hormonal balance and reproductive function.

For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Fertility and Sterility (2007) found that treatment with Mucuna pruriens improved sperm concentration and motility, and reduced psychological stress in infertile men. Additional investigations have reported increases in testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels following supplementation. However, much of the available research comes from small-scale or short-duration studies, and further large, well-designed trials are needed to confirm these benefits and fully elucidate mechanisms of action.

In summary, while cowhage is justified for use in supporting the male reproductive system based on both tradition and emerging scientific evidence, the evidence base is moderate (3/5), with the need for more rigorous clinical validation.
