Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cyperus rotundus, commonly known as nutgrass or purple nutsedge, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and folk medicine in many parts of the world. In these systems, it has been used for a variety of purposes including digestive health, fever reduction, and menstrual disorders. Specifically regarding the male reproductive system, Cyperus rotundus has been included in some traditional Ayurvedic formulations aimed at supporting male sexual health, vitality, and to address issues such as impotence or low libido. The traditional rationale is based on its reputed ability to balance bodily humors (notably 'vata' and 'pitta'), reduce inflammation, and act as an adaptogen.

However, while there are several preclinical studies that have explored the plant’s general pharmacological effects—such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties—there is limited direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for male reproductive health. Most claims regarding its use for the male reproductive system are rooted in historical and cultural practices rather than rigorous clinical trials. Thus, the evidence supporting its use for this body system is primarily traditional, and the scientific support is weak or indirect at best.
