For the body system: Male Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Euryale seed, also known as fox nut or "Qian Shi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been traditionally used to support male reproductive health. In TCM, it is believed to tonify the kidneys and stabilize essence ("jing"), which are thought to be closely related to reproductive function, including sperm quality and sexual vitality. The seeds are frequently prescribed in herbal formulas for issues such as premature ejaculation, nocturnal emissions, and general weakness of the reproductive organs. However, scientific research specifically validating these traditional claims is limited. A few animal studies suggest possible antioxidative and hormone-modulating effects, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Most available evidence is historical, rooted in centuries of use in China and other parts of Asia rather than modern biomedical research. Thus, while Euryale seed is widely used in traditional herbal medicine for male reproductive support, the scientific basis remains largely unsubstantiated at this time.
