Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flower pollen has been traditionally used, particularly in Europe, to support male reproductive health, including prostate and urinary tract function. Historical use often centers around preparations such as Cernilton (a standardized pollen extract), which has been widely used in Sweden, Germany, and other countries for managing symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and chronic prostatitis. The rationale for its use is based on anecdotal evidence and longstanding herbal traditions claiming that flower pollen can help reduce inflammation and improve urinary flow.

There are some clinical studies—mostly small-scale, open-label, or not rigorously blinded—that suggest modest benefits of flower pollen extracts in alleviating urinary symptoms associated with BPH and chronic prostatitis. However, the quality of evidence is limited, with many studies lacking robust controls or large sample sizes. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while there is some promise, the evidence base is not strong enough to definitively recommend flower pollen for male reproductive health, and more high-quality research is needed. Thus, while there is traditional and some preliminary scientific support, the primary justification for its use comes from tradition.
