For the body system: Male Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fo-Ti (Polygonum multiflorum, also known as He Shou Wu) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other traditional systems to support the male reproductive system. In TCM, Fo-Ti is believed to tonify the kidneys and liver, which are thought to play key roles in sexual vitality, fertility, and overall longevity. It is often included in herbal formulas intended to address symptoms such as reduced libido, premature aging, and infertility in men. The traditional use is based on centuries of anecdotal evidence and the herb’s reputation for restoring youthful vigor and hair color, which are sometimes considered markers of reproductive health in TCM philosophy.
However, scientific validation for these effects remains limited. While some laboratory studies suggest that Fo-Ti extracts may have antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties, and a few animal studies have hinted at possible benefits for sperm quality or testosterone levels, high-quality human trials are lacking. The current scientific literature does not robustly confirm Fo-Ti’s effectiveness for supporting the male reproductive system. Thus, the primary justification for its use in this context is traditional rather than evidence-based. Caution is advised, as Fo-Ti can have significant side effects, including liver toxicity in some cases.
