Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Honduran Sarsaparilla (Smilax spp.) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine in Central and South America, including Honduras. Traditionally, the root has been consumed as a general tonic, a blood purifier, and specifically for supporting male vitality and reproductive health. Folk practices often cite sarsaparilla for its reputed ability to increase libido and address male sexual concerns, likely due to its content of plant sterols and saponins. However, while these traditional uses are well-documented in ethnobotanical literature, scientific studies specifically validating its efficacy for the male reproductive system are lacking. Most modern research on sarsaparilla focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and potential antimicrobial properties rather than direct effects on male reproductive health or testosterone levels. There are some animal studies suggesting potential hormonal effects from certain saponins, but these are not specific to Honduran sarsaparilla and have not been substantiated in human clinical trials. Therefore, while its use for male reproductive support is rooted in tradition, there is little to no direct scientific evidence to support its effectiveness for this purpose.
