Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Leptadenia reticulata, commonly known as "Jivanti" in Ayurveda, has a longstanding use in traditional Indian medicine for supporting male reproductive health. Historically, it has been described as a "vajikara" (aphrodisiac) and "rasayana" (rejuvenator), believed to enhance vitality, improve sperm quality, increase libido, and support overall reproductive function. Classical Ayurvedic texts such as Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention its application in treating sexual debility and improving semen quality.

Modern scientific evidence for these effects, however, is limited. A few animal studies have suggested potential androgenic and spermatogenic effects, such as increased sperm count and motility, but these studies are preliminary and have not been widely replicated or validated in humans. Most current formulations and uses in herbal practice are based primarily on traditional knowledge rather than robust clinical trials. Therefore, while the use of Leptadenia for male reproductive support is well-established in traditional systems, scientific validation remains insufficient, justifying a moderate evidence rating.
