Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Marine oil, commonly referring to fish oil or oils derived from marine sources, contains high levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Scientific studies have investigated the effect of omega-3s on the male reproductive system, primarily focusing on sperm quality, motility, and overall fertility. Several clinical trials and observational studies suggest that supplementation with marine oil can improve certain parameters of semen quality, including increased sperm count, motility, and morphology in some populations of infertile men. Proposed mechanisms include anti-inflammatory effects, improved membrane fluidity of sperm cells, and modulation of oxidative stress, all of which may contribute to healthier sperm function. However, while promising, the evidence base is not yet robust. Some studies have shown more modest or inconclusive results, and more large-scale, well-controlled trials are needed to establish definitive recommendations. Overall, the scientific literature supports a moderate role for marine oil in supporting aspects of male reproductive health, especially sperm quality, but it is not a universally accepted or primary treatment for male infertility.
