Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Massularia acuminata is a plant traditionally used in West African ethnomedicine, particularly in Nigeria, as an aphrodisiac and for supporting male reproductive health. Local practices often involve chewing the stem or preparing decoctions believed to enhance libido, sexual performance, and general male vitality. This traditional use is rooted in anecdotal reports and longstanding cultural practices.

Scientific studies on Massularia acuminata are limited but do exist. Some animal studies, such as those in rats, have reported increased testosterone levels and improved sexual behavior parameters after administration of extracts from the plant. For example, a few studies published in Nigerian journals have documented enhanced mounting frequency and increased testicular function in rodents. However, these studies are preliminary, often lack replication, and have not been extended to well-controlled human clinical trials.

Because the evidence is largely ethnobotanical and based on animal research, with no robust human clinical trials to date, the use of Massularia acuminata to support the male reproductive system is rated as "traditional" with a modest evidence score of 2. More rigorous research is needed to validate these claims in humans.
