Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Montanoa tomentosa, commonly known as zoapatle, has a long history of traditional use in Mexican herbal medicine. While it is best known for its effects on the female reproductive system, particularly for inducing menstruation and aiding childbirth, there is some traditional use of Montanoa tomentosa to support male reproductive health as well. In particular, folk practices have used extracts of the plant as an aphrodisiac and to potentially enhance sexual function in men. Scientific studies investigating these claims are limited; however, some animal studies have reported increased sexual behavior in male rats administered Montanoa tomentosa extracts. For example, a study published in the journal Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2001) found that male rats showed enhanced mounting and intromission frequencies after treatment with plant extracts, suggesting possible pro-sexual effects. Despite these findings, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the traditional use outweighs the scientific validation for supporting the male reproductive system. Therefore, while there is a basis in folk medicine and some preliminary animal data, strong scientific evidence for its effectiveness in supporting male reproductive health is currently insufficient.
